How To Choose A Candle For Your Home

Not all candles are created equal by any means. The market is ever-expanding with larger companies all the way through to smaller-batch artisan candle makers blending fragrances, oils and waxes to create their own unique products. So how do you pick the right one for your purposes? Most people give strong consideration to the type of wax used to make the candle and whether they want a long lasting one or a stronger fragrance.

Placement

The first thing to consider is where you plan to use the candle. It is better to choose subtle scents for kitchen spaces where floral smells can often contrast too strongly against your cooking. Try a sweet or fresh candle that complements food aromas or something with mint. You should also consider the size of the space your candle will burn in. You don’t want something too strong for your area that will leave you feeling overwhelmed.

Scent preference

Everyone has different tastes in fragrances and scents. Some people love a really strong fruity scent while others prefer spicier less sweet options. Whatever your choice, it is important to make sure you give the tester a sniff-test in stores before you rush out and buy bulk online.

Material used

In terms of materials made to create candles, paraffin wax used to be the most commonly used wax for candles as it is a cheap by-product of petroleum. It is easy to dye and essential oils work well with this product. However, paraffin is a non-renewable resource making it less popular as consumers demand more eco-friendly products.

Soy wax has been growing in popularity as it is eco-friendly as it is a renewable resource, non-toxic and non-carcinogenic. They also have a longer burning time than paraffin candles and are easy to clean but it can be a more expensive wax and the fragrance throw is less than that of paraffin candles which is why most candle makers will use a blend of paraffin and soy wax.

Premium candles (like Christmas fragrance candles) will most likely be made from beeswax, palm wax, bayberry wax or a blend of the three as all three waxes hold fragrances very well and have a long burn time. Beeswax is amazing for hand sculpting into beautiful shapes which makes it one of the most pricey materials on the market.

Show the love

Whichever candle you choose to buy you will need to give it the love and care it deserves. Before lighting your candle ensure you trim the wick to 6mm and remove any wick debris. This encourages an even burn throughout the life of your candle and gives you the best value for your money.  Candles burn best in still air and so it is important for you to keep your candle away from any breezes or draughts which can cause smoke.

Many people also like to use a candle snuffer to prevent wicks from drifting askew and to avoid wax splash when putting out the flame. We always recommend that our customers store their candles in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight, dust and fluorescent light. Each of these factors can affect the fragrance and longevity of your candle.
